Coffee in Europe



Within the European Union, the first consuming countries in Europe are in order of importance: Germany (29% of the consumption in the European Union), France (16%), Italy ( 15%), Spain (9%) and the UK (7%). Together, these countries account for over three-quarters of coffee consumption in Europe.


History of coffee in Europe

The coffee arrived in Europe around 1600 introduced by Venetian merchants who import coffee from the city of Mocha in Yemen.

In 1684, opening Procope in Paris, it still exists in the sixth arrondissement.

Penetration coffee in Europe was quite slow: the importation of the exotic product is expensive for governments that heavily taxing to restrict consumption. It was long considered a luxury item.
