Milk production in South Africa

South Africa has 2,700 dairy farmers. From 1997 to 2010, the number of producers has fallen by 61%. Province of North Cape has lost 80% of its producers and the Free State, another province, 50%. Since 2003, half milk buyers have closed shop.

In 2009, 32,300 tons of dairy products were imported and 41,700 exported.

Milk production in South Africa is modern: productivity and equipment are comparable to standard European. Pets live outside year-round.

And as labor is relatively abundant, the trend is not yet in milking robots.

The cost of milk production in South Africa is among the lowest in the industrialized countries. In the north-east of the country, cows are grazing.

Since the mid-1990's, the South African dairy industry was deregulated and delivered to the vagaries of world prices. In periods of overproduction, the State imposes quotas and penalizes lower prices.

The actors of the South African dairy sector

Milk purchasers are large companies, including Nestlé, Parmalat and Clover. The latter has in South Africa one of the world's largest factories.

Clover is a leading South African manufacturer of food products. Producers negotiate directly with dairies for sale; contracts vary by business requirements.

Example, Parmalat requires a period of three months before a change of dairy producer. There are also other smaller regional dairies, which have, however little influence on the selling price of milk.
