Canadians consume 10 billion cups of tea per year. This market will grow 40% by 2020. Each Canadian drinks 78 liters of tea per year.


The tea market in Canada

The total dollar share of specialty teas sold in Canada increased by 7% between 2010 and 2011 and now accounts for almost 58% of the total value of the tea country.

Western and Ontario lead the country in terms of sales specialty tea, and black tea remains dominant in one region of the country: Atlantic Canada.

379 million hot teas were served in the Canadian food services in 2012, up from 346 million in 2008. Value total sales nationwide now stands at $ 760 million.

Over the past five years, portions of hot tea in food services increased 3.5% per year on average.

Tea consumption in Canada

The average Canadian consumes 8.3 cups of tea per week and tea consumption is expected to grow 40% over the next seven years.

Analyses indicate that tea consumption has increased by one third and perhaps even more, over the past 10 years. Between 2006 and 2009, consumption of tea increased from 62.04 Canadian liters to 78 liters, while it stood at 93 liters in 2011.

In 1991, the average consumption was 36 liters per person.
