Tea in Germany



German third largest tea consumers in the European Union each year drink about 26 liters per capita of black and green tea. The main supplier countries for the German market are China, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Iran. Between 2006 and 2010, consumption of tea has increased on average by 4.0% per year in Germany.

Germany discovered tea before the English. In the 18th century, he already replaced the soup in the morning. Today, the Germans consume as much as the English and two to three times more than the French.

Germans drink about 26 liters of tea per capita, approximately 25,000 tonnes of black and green tea each year. The main supplier countries for the German market are China, India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The volume of imports is greater than 50,000 tons.

Between 2006 and 2010, consumption of tea has increased on average by 4.0% per year. Germany is the third largest consumer of tea in the U.S., with a market share of 12% of EU imports in terms of volume.

German tea drinkers are consumers concerned about the quality, in particular the Search high quality teas. Consumers are increasingly attracted specialty stores, because of their wide variety of flavors ranges, and expert advice.

Germany is an important market for teas from Darjeeling, Assam and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), although the German market represents less than 1% of global tea production.


Germany imports 78% of the supply of black tea from Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Argentina and Iran. Germany is the second largest re-exporter in the European Union.

In 2010, the German re-exports totaled 19,000 tonnes, representing 22% of total exports to the European Union . Exports go to various countries such as the United States, Poland and France.

Exports to the United States experienced an annual growth of 170%. Two majors tea brands dominate the German tea market.

The first is Teekanne with 35% market share, then Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft with 22% and known for its brands, Messmer and Millford. Bad follow Heilbrunner and Goldmännchen.
