Milk in Canada

From 2010 to 2011, sales of milk increased to 2.8 billion liters. 2% milk, whose sales totaled $ 1.3 billion liters, is the most popular in Canada milky drink, but chocolate milk has posted the strongest growth.

The Canadian dairy market

Sales of milk 2% and 1% are rising, while those of 3.25% milk and skim milk remained stable. Canadian dairy producers supply two main markets :

Dairy production in Canada

Although the number of dairy cows has decreased over the past decade, production per cow it has increased by 16%. In 2011, there were 987,000 dairy cows in the country, producing an average of 78 hl of milk each.

In Canada, over 76% of dairy herds are enrolled in different programs DHI. Listed on official milk recording programs cows produced an average of 9,780 kg of milk per lactation period of 305 days.

Holsteins are the most common dairy breed (94% of the dairy herd) Ayrshire breeds, Brown Swiss , Canadienne, Guernsey, Jersey and Milking Shorthorn are also present on Canadian farms.

However, the farms have grown in size and becoming more efficient. Indeed, from 2002 to 2012, milk production per farm has increased significantly by 34%.
